Foaling Date Estimator Foals! Nothing is more beautiful than to watch the beginning of a new born life. I missed the delivery of the first 5 foals. Sometimes it was only a few minutes but I never experienced the actual birth. I then decided not to miss any delivery and have been successful ever since.

A mare is very
well capable to deliver a foal by herself but in case of complications, it often
is fatal. Enough for me to sleep 1 or more nights in the barn and to watch the
delivery from a distance. After arrival of the
foal I clean the nose and mouth (breathing) and help to dry the baby with a towel
as part of imprinting. Other than that we only have about 4 times of 5 minutes
contact with the mare and foal in the first 24 hours. I do monitor mother and baby
closely and will not be satisfied until the foal is standing and nursing.
